Leadbelly is an intimate, purpose built live music venue, cocktail bar and restaurant, set in the heart of Sydney’s vibrant Newtown, with the best national and international entertainment available – from rock n’ roll and blues, to indie, folk and roots/reggae. This September sees an amazing line up of artist gracing Leadbelly’s stage this month including a special acoustic performance by multi-platinum naughties icon Alex Lloyd, a Q&A with artist manager extraordinaire Simon Napier-Bell, and sets from roots rock legend Mark Olson from The Jayhawks, and world traveling singer-songwriter Patrick James, to name a few.

Alex Lloyd

ALEX LLOYD – September 8, $25 + bf, Doors 6:00pm

With more than 30 album releases under its belt, Liberation Blue celebrated the welcomed return of the label’s ‘Acoustic’ series with their 2016: ‘Acoustica’, 12 stunning, re-worked classic tunes spanning the career of ARIA winner and multi-platinum singer/songwriter Alex Lloyd.

“It was certainly something I’d thought of doing before,” Lloyd says of the Acoustica recording, the singer’s seventh full-length release. With four ARIAs already under his belt, Lloyd was intrigued with the concept of revisiting his older material. Expect to hear radio hits ‘Amazing’, ‘Coming Home’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘Black The Sun’ and more, his extensive catalogue getting a brand new lease of life.

“This project came along at a perfect time for me,” says Lloyd.
“Doing these recordings really helped create a spark in me – it’s been great to re-address these songs, and I’m really happy how it’s turned out.”

Simon Napier Bell

AN EVENING WITH SIMON NAPIER-BELL – September 11, $36.75, Doors 6:00 pm

Stuart Coupe in conversation with Simon Napier-Bell (rock manager, author, composer, record producer and film maker).
As an Artist Manager, Simon has worked with The Yardbirds, Dusty Springfield, Ultravox, Marc Bolan and T-Rex, Japan, Asia, Candi Staton, Boney M, Sinéad O’Connor and most famously discovered George Michael and Wham.

Wham became the first Western band to ever tour China in the early 80s thanks to Simon’s persistence. In Britain he worked alongside Beatles and Stones managers Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham, taking notes and observing the workings of the music industry which he later applied to his artists whom all became household names. He witnessed the explosion of punk rock, advised Malcolm McClaren and watched the birth of dance music and disco.

Simon also discovered Australia’s very own John Paul Young in a Sydney bar – handing him the hit ‘Love is in the Air‘ – originally intended for a female voice.

Simon’s composition credits include co-writing the 60’s hit ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me‘ first performed by Dusty Springfield, and then by Elvis Presley.  He is the author of four best-selling books on popular music and recently directed two film documentaries. Join us for a discussion focusing on Simon’s brilliant career and the history of popular music.

Ingunn Ringvold & Mark Olson

MARK OLSON (THE JAYHAWKS) – September 12, $34.70, Doors 6:00pm

Kaleidoscope Music presents Mark Olson (ex-Jayhawks/Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers) and Ingunn Ringvold in support of their new album ‘Spokeswoman of the Bright Sun’, this will see them comprehensively tour Australia playing intimate venues in many cities for the first time.

Patrick James

PATRICK JAMES – September 15, $23.50, Doors 6:00pm

Sydney song-smith Patrick James has taken an adventurous turn with the release of new single ‘Lay It Down’; an electrifying pop song with elevated synths, infectious guitars and a heated dose of Phil Collin’s inspired percussion.
To celebrate the release of ‘Lay It Down‘, Patrick James will be playing two special shows in Sydney and Melbourne through September. Lay It Down is the first new music Australia has heard from Patrick James since his gorgeous debut album Outlier featuring crowd pleasers ‘California Song’, ‘Bugs’ and ‘Covered In Rain’.
The creative process for Lay It Down was unfamiliar territory for Patrick, where he utilised a lot of sounds and instruments to create something that was new but still recognizably Patrick James.
