Man of many instrumental hats, Mickey Kojak is back with his latest single “Get Out”. Lending his keys, drums, vocals and production skills to the track, “Get Out” was written and recorded entirely in his custom-built Sydney studio.
Kojak’s music comes from a deeply personal space offering honest, raw lyrics and a soundscape to match and his latest track is no different. He explains “the catalyst for “Get Out” was the struggle of being in a long-term relationship that isn’t working, realising that the easiest option to resolving a problem isn’t always the best option. Once that hard decision is made and you call it quits, no matter how civil it may have been, things become turbulent sooner or later. In the song itself, everything has been stripped down to the bare essentials so the message of the song has a suitable platform.”
This latest track is the first since 2017 EP release Surrender, which clocked 1,000,000+ streams in Australia alone. Around the release, Kojak toured heavily, with the support slot for Motez’s sold out Australian theatre run a highlight. Aside from a handful of shows, including a jam-packed spot at Groovin the Moo Canberra, this year’s focus has been on writing and experimenting with new recording techniques.
Classically trained, Kojak could play the piano before he could read and write and rather unconventionally for his genre, composes his tracks at the piano with pen and paper nearby. As well as knowing his way around a guitar, he says “I’ve always admired drummers more than any other musician. At the start of 2018, I bought a drum kit and started pounding away and once I was half decent, I started getting ideas for guitar riffs, synth lines and melodies. All from playing the simplest rock beat. It made no sense, but by the end of the week, I’d written and started recording the six or so songs that would be the basis for the next batch of tunes.”
This track and those to follow from his forthcoming EP marks a move from producer to live performance and sees Kojak busy reinventing his live show experience – for both himself and his audience.
