With this brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

MAMMA MIA! is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia“. Ulvaeus and Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, were involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production and she has also been present at many of the premieres around the world. The musical includes such hits as “Super Trouper“, “Lay All Your Love on Me“, “Dancing Queen“, “Knowing Me, Knowing You“, “Take a Chance on Me“, “Thank You for the Music“, “Money, Money, Money“, “The Winner Takes It All“, “Voulez-Vous“, “SOS” and the title track. Over 60 million people have seen the show, which has grossed $2 billion worldwide since its 1999 debut. A film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård and Julie Walters was released in July 2008.

As of 2018, the show has productions in London’s West End, where it is the seventh longest-running show in West End history, as well as various international productions. Its Broadway incarnation closed in September 2015 after a 14-year run, making it the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history.

MAMMA MIA will be staged by local production company The Very Popular Theatre Company, under the direction of Australian musical theatre star, Erin James. Dan Wilson (RENT, Starstruck) will musical direct. With Lighting design by CONDA award-winning designer Jacob Harwood (Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Mary Poppins) and choreography by Rachel Wilson (High School Musical).

Born and raised in Lake Macquarie, Erin James graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theatre and also holds a Diploma of Education (Music). A winner of the 2007 Bound For Broadway TDP Scholarship, Erin has performed in New York, New Zealand, Europe and Southeast Asia, as well as various tours in Australia. Erin’s theatre credits include Australian and international productions of Fiddler on the Roof and CATS as well as touring Australian productions of Love Never Dies, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and My Girl, Blood Brothers and My Fair Lady. Her work in the feature film The Little Death earned her Best Supporting Actress nominations for both AACTA Awards and Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards. She also starred opposite Tom Ward (Please Like Me) in My Best Friend is Stuck on the Ceiling – a short film by Matt Vesely. Most recently, Erin made her directorial debut at Hayes Theatre Co with the acclaimed production of She Loves Me and was Dance/Staging Supervisor for Julie Andrews’ My Fair Lady (2016-2017). Erin is a proud member of Actor’s Equity.

It now comes to Newcastle for the first time and will be housed at the Civic Theatre from October 2019.
